The Big Green Wave

It seems that the expression “going green” has taken on a new meaning as of late, and that’s not necessarily a good thing.  According to New Frontier Data, marijuana sales will exceed $11.7 billion nationwide this year, including $3.8 billion in California, $2 billion in Washington and $1.7 billion in Colorado.  This amount will more than double by 2025.  BDS Analytics claims that the industry now employs 121,000 people as compared to the 50,000 employed by the coal industry.  In the meanwhile, more than 60 percent of Americans now believe marijuana should be legal.  Many advocates argue that the growing rise of pot popularity is evidence that they’re on the right side of history.  However, the problem with their case is that the opinion of the majority does not necessarily constitute facts nor what’s in the best interests of our country.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, short term effects of marijuana use include impaired body movement, impaired memory, mood changes and difficulty with thinking and problem solving.  The long term impact can actually lead to an overall lower IQ, especially for users 25 and younger, in addition to breathing problems, an increased risk of lung cancer, heart problems and even schizophrenia.  As for specific statistics, The Huffington Post reported that employees who test positive for marijuana had 55 percent more industrial accidents, 85 percent higher injury rates and 75 percent greater absenteeism, than those who tested negative.  Our CEO Jeffrey Fiorentino did an excellent job laying a host of additional statistical facts in his well-researched article of our November 2017 issue.

Based on national momentum, it seems that all we can do is keep reminding everyone of the inconvenient facts about marijuana.  Hopefully, the momentum will fade before mass legalization creates the next tsunami of addiction to strike our country.
