Shot in the Arm for Fight Against Opioids

The 21st Century Cures Act was passed in the waning days of the Obama administration and was trumpeted as a big step, dedicating $1 billion to fight opioid addiction.  Yet, there was little fanfare when $6 billion was recently dedicated to the exact same cause.  It also didn’t have a fancy name attached, as Congress buried the funding in the budget bill passed earlier in the year.  Why is that?  It’s because the problem has become so overwhelming that we now realize even a staggering sum such as $6 billion is nothing more than a good start.  County, state and federal agencies are overrun by increased overdoses and the needs for greater treatment and policing that are driving social services to the brink.  One study put out by the White House suggests that the opioid epidemic alone has cost the US over half a trillion dollars annually between actual costs and lost production.  That’s greater than 3% of the national GDP.  This helps to explain why President Trump’s fiscal 2019 budget has proposed nearly $17 billion in additional funding.  We have a lot to be hopeful for as greater attention to this plight had led to increased resources.  Ideally this momentum will carry over into the battle against all types of addiction and also translate into more recovery success stories as well.
