Opioid overdoses are on the rise across the country according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  However, at the same time, more people than ever are being saved, thanks to naltrexone based rescue medication such as Narcan.  In fact, during an appearance by president Trump, discussing how to tackle the opioid crisis, the pharmaceutical company that makes Narcan pledged to offer it for free to schools and universities around the nation.  Detractors of Narcan feel it only serves as a Catch-22 type solution, because its amazing capacity to revive someone mid-overdose encourages a number of abusers to push the limits and minimize the potential risk of overdose related death.  Sometimes people even require multiple doses of Narcan, quantities of which are not necessarily assured on a busy night or weekend as the overdose problem continues to grow.  It reminds me of the movie Flatliners in which the characters induced death because of the ultimate high they got when they were revived.  This latest CDC report is clear evidence that we still have our work cut out for us in terms of education and prevention because Narcan by itself is nothing more than an emergency stop-gap measure on the road to practically inevitable and eventual overdose death.
